Lure of the sea

There are countless lures in our lives or it may be that our lives are made of lures. Mine is the sea. I hear its song all over the year and like Ulysses’ sailors I am not wise enough to deafen my ears. I am trapped into its blue.

The sea knows things and is a cure. For loneliness, grief, unhappiness and love, as Mr. Somerset Maugham wisely put:

β€œYou know, when one’s in love,’ I said, ‘and things go all wrong, one’s terribly unhappy and one thinks one won’t ever get over it. But you’ll be astounded to learn what the sea will do.

Well, love isn’t a good sailor and it languishes on a sea voyage. You’ll be surprised when you have the Atlantic between you and Larry to find how slight the pang is that before you sailed seemed intolerable.”
―W. Somerset Maugham, The Razor’s Edge

So when one’s in love, get on a boat… I cannot help but love Somerset’s magic realism.

I illustrate with pictures from my short May holiday in the Ionian.

You have wonderful talent in mixing words to help a reader like me in building their own boat. I love being lonely with your posts to read and to sail with their meanings.
I really like it. Thank you

Thank you very much Mohamad. Your words are far more beautiful than my post. I will try to keep up πŸ™‚ Anyway it is not that difficult to build boats with Mr.Maugham’s words as oars.

I live 6 hours away from the sea, so when I do get there I soak up hits healing powers even if just to listen to the waves crashing against the rocks. Your writing is beautiful as always Julia. 🌹

I read The Razor’s Edge while a student in India. Great place to unstrip some of my Western layers and get back to basics.

Nice pics. I don’t physically travel much these days so always nice to enjoy vicariously. πŸ™‚

Thank you for your words πŸ™‚ They always help me travel vicariously πŸ™‚ Well, you are lucky to have studied in India…I have discovered Somerset in my childhood and the Razor’s Edge but later. He is my all time favorite writer… I don’t travel much either, usually to the sea. I used to go camping at the Black Sea and life seemed a never-ending poem…but I almost drowned as the Black Sea is an unpredictable one- hence the name. So I prefer the Ionian Sea as there are hardly any waves and also for the mountains.
