“Forgiveness is found in the cooling of blatant heat
A treasure typically reserved
For hunters and priests
Finally shifting in the form of falling leaves
A light reprieve
From hollow hell and dampened glory

The sky awakens to bodies succumbing
To the Cliff Swallow’s song
A disbelief of patience
That strands the torture of constant war, for
Beauty is a season in desire
It is a body bright
Knotted In the fingers of sunlight
And a bored man’s tongue
Can find the fruits of passion
In the throes of this calm union

Roadside Maples dance in irenic fashion
With acorn offerings littering
The feet of wolves nurturing the day
And autumn prints pry fault
From the aging jetty of the mind…”

[Patrick Hart is a transplanted South Georgian writer who originally hails from Hampton Roads Virginia. He currently serves in the United States Air Force, as an air traffic controller.

Like most of us, Patrick draws most of his inspiration from his history. Through his writing, he seeks to dredge bodies from the dark pools of his mind, as much as he desires to describe and define what life is.

If he had to use one word to describe himself, it would be cerebral.]

Good for you spells doom. It’s the American creed. It’s a celebration
of greed. Good for you doesn’t say hello.

Don’t look at the what, look at the how!
How the now cow, a sound noun, is brown.
There’s no but.
Something really vast has changed.
It’s got a billy goat brain, a hummingbird mouth…”

David Lohrey was born on the Hudson River but grew up on the Mississippi in Memphis. He currently teaches in Tokyo. He has reviewed books for The Los Angeles Times and The Orange County Register, has been a member of the Dramatists Guild in New York, and he is currently writing a memoir of his years living on the Persian Gulf. His latest book, The Other Is Oneself: Postcolonial Identity in a Century of War: 20th Century African and American Writers Respond to Survival and Genocide, is available on Amazon.com. after Meghan O’Rourke

Were you cantilevered
was the moon a pea on the ceiling

was it inverted
& could you see the peppercorns blinking

how does it not drip

were the slats closed
& did you stop to shatter the bedsheets

did you remove all the metal
& did the quitting hurt

was the weld weakened
what was the sound that hit the floor

was there wind
were you gasping
did it smell like leaves….”

“Once I met a fork in that craggy road,

And it did two bold options so present –

Two ways in which to go, with choice proceed

Across the scanty plains of life and breath.

One was easy. Simple love for concrete minds

As was solid writ, to nakedness combine

And so become a woman in the truest sense.

Like that! I’d live by Eden’s face and hence

Would bat all questions to our bodied stance”….
