What Does A Translator Do?

🔔“Translation is something of the runt of the literary litter, more often perceived as grunt work than art work,” Max Norman writes. “Its practitioners have rarely received attention for anything other than screwing up.” In the United States, it’s estimated that about 3% of books published annually are translations. But translators are increasingly visible in the public sphere.

Inspired by The New Yorker

💆I have been a translator for almost 25 years. I have translated a wide range of topics, including business, architecture, technical books, articles, laws, contracts, and poetry, but my primary area of expertise is legal translations.
Nonetheless, what I mostly do is transcreation.

🔔What is transcreation?
Transcreation is a term coined from the words “translation” and “creation”, and a concept used in the field of translation studies to describe the process of adapting a message from one language to another, while maintaining its intent, style, tone, and context. A successfully transcreated message evokes the same emotions and carries the same implications in the target language as it does in the source language.

💆Translating is like swimming. At least for me. It can be a bit risky, but it’s manageable if you know the right moves, the right words, and the right structure. It becomes pleasurable. I like translating, and I have a passion for new and old words and their etymology.

💆With so much experience, I do not do extensive research anymore before translating.
I have compiled a glossary of the most challenging terms I have encountered.

✨Nevertheless, I check all the new terms (if there are any) in dictionaries and specialty documents. That is the lengthiest task when it comes to translations.

💸Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to be useful, but it cannot understand the specialized vocabulary used in the corporate, legal, financial, and railway industries.

💆I perpetually use three dictionaries: the Cambridge dictionary, Black’s Law Dictionary, and an etymology dictionary.

The Economist’s word of the year

The Economist’s word of the year for 2024
“The Greeks knew how to talk about politics and power”

The word of the year that the Economist settled on is kakistocracy: the rule of the worst.

“government by the worst element of a society,” 1829, coined (by Thomas Love Peacock) on analogy of its opposite, aristocracy, from Greek kakistos “worst,” superlative of kakos “bad” + -cracy. Perhaps the closest word in ancient Greek was kakonomia “a bad system of laws and government,” hence kakonomos “with bad laws, ill-governed.” – from www.etymonline.com

This is far from an ancient word, at least in English; indeed, it appears to be an antonym created to counter aristocracy. The earliest known use of kakistocracy was in the 1820s. The OED cites evidence for it from 1829, in the writing of Thomas Love Peacock, satirical novelist and poet.

The Best Writing Tip/ Der beste Schreib-Tipp

Only English In The Classroom?

🔔Only English in the classroom?

💆Yes, I also have international students with whom I don’t share a common language.

💆My students are never struggling with understanding, as I am willing to explain any concepts and terms in a simpler way.

❤️The greatest compliment I have received from my students is about making them learn English without being aware that they were learning anything. The struggle was nil.

✨That is the power of conversation ONLY in English!

💸Nevertheless, I make sure that the learning also happens outside the classroom by sending my students:
➡️The follow up sheet after every session.
➡️Videos made by me about a variety of topics, including grammar themes, trending news, the global economy, new English vocabulary, and essential economic concepts.
➡️Articles and books from my digital library that I have built in 20 years of teaching.

The Best Writing Tip

Here is the best writing tip I know.

Before you send or share something, read it out loud. This applies to emails, social media posts, articles, and even text messages, provided they are deemed important.

Reading it out loud as if you were telling a story to a group of people is the key. When I used to read my writing aloud, I would mumble it and not use the appropriate tone or speed. I would always forget things, and some parts would still sound bad.

I started doing this in my early days of writing. Surprisingly, I began with poetry, and unsure of my abilities, I took calculated risks to enhance it. It worked like a charm.

About Me

👋Hi, I’m Iulia and I do not like to talk about myself.

❤️Here’s a little intro as I have never done that before.

💆I started my coaching business in 2012. Since then I had thousands of students and met some of the most fascinating people in the world. I am very grateful for that.

👀I am very independent and like to keep my life private.

💚I have 3 stepdaughters who sometimes call me “mother-of-dragons”🐉.

✈️Thanks to freelancing, I started remote work way before the pandemic, and I write and teach on the go. Some of my most beautiful articles were written on the beach.

🏪Only after I became city councillor did I realize that my greatest strength is public speaking and rhetoric.

💸I niched down a bit and I write fragrance and legal business news articles and SEO blogs.

✏️In 2012, during a period of significant challenges, I began writing by combining words into poems. Since then, two anthologies have published my writings.

💟Writing is my medicine in times of adversity.

Fun facts:
🎵 I took piano lessons a long time ago.
🚲I’m a big-time cyclist and roller-skater⛸. I have developed the habit of gracefully falling with minor injuries.
🦋I have a rare phobia, Lepidopterophobia (fear of butterflies and moths), but I like snakes 🐍.
📚I’ve always loved geometry, reading, and teaching.
🥐Even though I’m an awful cook, I still put in the time and effort to make elaborate dinners for Easter and Christmas.

Your turn! Would love to hear a fun fact about you too 😀💜.

This photo was taken in the Bucegi mountains and it is probably one of my best.

Writing Tips

I have been asked to write more about copywriting and developing writings skills.

Plese read https://www.quora.com/profile/Iulia-Halatz/Writing-Prompts-That-Work-For-Me-Write-as-if-your-life-depends-on-it-On-first-impression-writing-is-an-activity-like

How I started writing

Storytelling is never easy. It was easier for me as I have formal training.
But I started writing later in my life.

First and foremost, you must love writing and enjoy the soft caress of your story. My stories come in waves. Whenever I start writing, I feel like living in the story I am building.
How do you do that?
In the initial stage of my writing life, whenever I did not know what to write and how to write, I used to describe paintings. Why?
Because painters do not describe feelings, they create sentiments. Therefore, in front of a beautiful painting, I attempt to replicate the artist’s intent through my own words.
For example, I wrote a poem, “My name is green,” while looking at a Van Gogh painting.

But you can never be a good writer unless you are a passionate reader. Words create magic in the pen of astonishing writers. Education is necessary to master this power, unless you’re Shakespeare.

Nevertheless, I write for pleasure and profit.
What could I do to make your writer’s life easier?

Are there processes, guidance, or tools you have in place to help your clients understand a wider context for your work? Or anything you would like to add to make their lives easier?

Can vs. Could: Learn the Difference

Master English Grammar
Can vs. Could: Learn the Difference

People often use can and could interchangeably, even though the words have slightly different meanings. Luckily, the rules about when to use can vs. could are pretty straightforward.

Both are modal verbs used to express ability or possibility; they can also be used to ask for permission.

When you’re talking about the possibility of something happening in the future, use can if something is very likely to happen. Could, on the other hand, should be used for things that have an equal chance of not happening. When you’re referring to someone’s ability to do something, use can in present-tense scenarios and could in past-tense situations.

Avoid making a grammatical blunder by reading our piece on the differences between can vs. could.

What’s the difference between Can and Could?
Unlike some other commonly confused words, such as to vs. for, can and could have only two main differences: tense and likelihood.

Can is the present tense modal verb used to express someone’s ability.

I can book that appointment for you right now if you’d like.

Could is the past tense modal verb used to express someone’s ability.

Harpreet could have pitched a perfect game if his manager had kept him in.

Both verbs can also be used to express the likelihood of something happening in the future tense, which is when most people often confuse the two. Can is used to describe scenarios that are more likely than not to happen, while could is used for scenarios that are less probable.

You can get an upset stomach from eating too many habaneros.
I really think Steve could win this season of the Great British Baking Show.

What is unique selling point (USP)?

What is unique selling point (USP)?

A unique selling point (USP), also called a unique selling proposition, is a marketing statement that differentiates a product or brand from its competitors. A USP might boast the lowest cost, the highest quality, the most experience, the first in its product class or another trait that sets the offering apart from the competition. A unique selling point can be thought of as “what you have that competitors don’t.”

A successful USP promises a clearly articulated benefit to consumers, offering them something that competitive products can’t or don’t offer. The USP should also be compelling enough to attract new customers. It carefully balances what the customer wants with what the business does well or what it can deliver that the others cannot. The idea is to make the product or brand stand out from the competition in some unique way. The USP should appeal to what the customer cares about and clearly differentiate the company’s offering from everyone else.

A USP is sometimes formally expressed in a positioning statement, which articulates how a product or brand meets a consumer need in a way that its competitors do not.

What are unique selling point examples?
An effective USP distinguishes a product or brand from the competition in a way that compels customers to want to learn more about the offering and consider other aspects of the company’s messaging. Here are several examples of effective unique selling points:

Canva: Empowering the world to design. Canva is an online graphic design tool that simplifies the design process for all types of users. Its USP implies a platform that is highly usable and has been universally embraced, reinforcing the message that the service caters to a wide range of users who find it easier to use than alternative products.

Hiut Denim Co.: Do one thing well. Unlike many companies, Hiut Denim makes jeans and nothing else. But rather than shying away from this fact, the brand capitalizes on it in its marketing. The USP suggests a company that knows what it’s doing because it focuses exclusively on one thing and is not as prone to distraction as the competition.

Patagonia: We’re in business to save our home planet. With its USP, Patagonia establishes itself as something more than just a clothing retailer, offering a mission statement as well as a selling point. The USP helps to set the brand apart from the competition, while appealing to customers who are concerned about the environment and want to feel good about their purchases.

Peet’s Coffee: The original craft coffee. The first Peet’s Coffee opened on April 1, 1966, in Berkeley, Calif., sparking a coffee revolution that eventually spread across the U.S. and is still being felt today. The USP takes advantage of this history to set Peet’s apart from other coffee vendors and establish itself as the company with the type of experience and know-how its competition lacks.

Shopify: The platform commerce is built on. Shopify is a leading e-commerce website that offers tools for selling merchandise online. Millions of businesses in 175 countries now use the service. Shopify’s USP draws attention the company’s prominent position in the market, its widespread popularity and its overall usability, suggesting to customers that this is where they should go to get the job done right.
