Which Charles Dickens novels should I read if I am interested in social critique and commentary on the economic and social issues of the 19th century?

Quora Answers

Great Expectations

Great Expectations works on a number of levels: as a critique of Victorian society and as an exploration of memory and writing. However, it is perhaps more importantly a search for true identity. During the course of the novel, Pip comes to realize that his “great expectations”—social standing and wealth—are less important than loyalty and compassion. Great Expectations was also noted for its blend of humour, mystery, and tragedy. In the original ending of the work, Pip and Estella were not reunited, but Dickens was persuaded to write a happier conclusion.

Bleak House

Bleak House, novel by British author Charles Dickens, published serially in 1852–53 and in book form in 1853 and considered to be among the author’s best work. Bleak House is the story of the Jarndyce family, who wait in vain to inherit money from a disputed fortune in the settlement of the extremely long-running lawsuit of Jarndyce and Jarndyce. The novel is pointedly critical of England’s Court of Chancery, in which cases could drag on through decades of convoluted legal maneuvering.

Legal corruption permeates this novel like a disease, issuing in particular from the Byzantine lawsuit with which all the book’s characters have a connection. Dickens provides his customary witty dissection of the layers of Victorian society. Characters—from the wearyingly earnest to the brilliantly shallow, from the foolish and foppish to the vampiristic and dangerous—are all illuminated in the darkness of Dickens’s outraged urbane opus. In reality, it is the public sphere as a whole that is satirized in Bleak House. Everything resembles Chancery: Parliament, the provincial aristocracy, and even Christian philanthropy is caricatured as moribund and self-serving. The narrative, which is split between the third person and Esther, concerns moral disposition as much as social criticism. The novel has also been hailed as a progenitor of the genre of detective fiction, with the methodical and dogged Inspector Bucket as the first police detective hero in English literature.

Reflection Emirates Pride Perfumes

My most recent Fragrantica article is about Reflection from Emirates Pride Perfumes, an estival perfume dedicated to the warmhearted bond between Father and Son.

“I believe that what we become depends on what our fathers teach us at odd moments, when they aren’t trying to teach us. We are formed by little scraps of wisdom.”
― Umberto Eco

First, I loved the story, as I believe in the strong unseen bond between parents and children, and I am proud to have shared a very strong bond with my father. We were very much alike. He used to call me Iulius, and he instilled in me a strong sense of independence and strength. Even to this day, I keep in mind my father’s wise words and I try to follow his advice: “If you don’t work hard, your luck will dwindle. And the better you work and prepare, the luckier you become.” ; “Always play fair and admit your mistakes. There is nothing to be gained by not admitting failure or defeat, you should acknowledge your shortcomings and become better”…

Reflection’s fragrance story reminded me of the feeling that even if you are in a bad place in the present, you feel warmed up by the memory of a beautiful heavenly place that puts honey on your face. Sweet and warm. Some memories act like heaters for the heart. These are the cherished memories of my time spent with my father.

Creativity Surge Hits Everywhere

Creativity hits everywhere! Just be prepared.
There are no typical days for writers, bloggers or poets.

Here I am (in the picture) in a forest clearing in the mountains, under attack by shepherd dogs and a flock of sheep. In the last photo, you can also see the sheep.

I have answered some question about creativity and writing on Quora!

Here is another answer: How do you complete a poem in any subject matter you are interested in?

I travel with a notebook and two phones, and I am prepared for any whiff of a good idea, feeling, vision, or image that I can incorporate into my writing.

What fragrances do you wear when you feel under the weather?

My latest article on Fragrantica covers my experience with positive, moderately-vibrant, and mellow-soothing fragrances that make me forget about my headaches. Fresh and ozonic scents are the best.

We talk about fragrances in connection with everything — holidays, food, campaigns, special occasions, seasons, ingredients — but what about the fragrances we use when we do not feel well or to alleviate temporary health problems?

💥TOPICS FOR OUR BUSINESS ENGLISH COURSES

💥A bylaw is a rule or law established by an organization or a local government to regulate itself or manage the community’s affairs. Bylaws are specific to the organization or locality that creates them and provide detailed guidelines on various aspects of governance, conduct, and procedures.

💥Main Principles of Bylaws

💥Bylaws are created by a governing body, such as a city council, homeowners’ association, or corporation’s board of directors, to regulate matters within their jurisdiction.

💥Bylaws contain specific rules and regulations that address the unique needs and circumstances of the organization or community.
Bylaws have the force of law within the context they apply. Violating a bylaw can result in penalties or other enforcement actions.
Bylaws must align with higher laws, such as federal, state, or provincial laws. They cannot contradict broader legal frameworks.
Bylaws should be clearly written and accessible to those they govern, ensuring everyone understands their rights and responsibilities.

💥Examples to Illustrate Bylaws

⚡️Homeowners’ Association (HOA) Bylaws
Homeowners must maintain their lawns and gardens to a certain standard.
To ensure the neighborhood remains attractive and property values are maintained.
Homeowners who do not comply may receive warnings or fines.

⚡️Municipal Bylaws
No loud noises after 10 PM in residential areas.
To maintain peace and quiet for residents during nighttime.
Violators may receive warnings, fines, or other penalties from local authorities.

💥Key Takeaways

⚡️Bylaws are local rules. They are created by organizations or local governments to manage internal and community affairs.
⚡️Bylaws provide clear and specific guidelines tailored to the needs of the governed body.
They have legal standing within their context and must be followed by those they apply to.
⚡️Bylaws must not conflict with broader legal frameworks and must be fair and transparent.

AI Writing or Copywriting?

This is a poem I wrote a long time ago:

The Moon

In the evening
with my eyelashes
I kill all the events of the day
I choke perceptions and
reveries green
That could be real
Pending dream.

In the evening
with my fingers

I spin yarns
For your sweet bedlams…

This is a poem written by AI (Gemini) following the prompt below:

Write a poem about the moon in the style of Emily Dickinson.

A Pearl upon the Velvet Night –
A Lady, shy, in gown of mist,
Her Carriage drawn by spectral light,
Across the wide, star-dusted tryst.

No Coachman bold, nor Steed of fire,
She pilots with a silent hand,
A Beacon, cold, with keen desire,
To pierce the secrets of the land.

The sleeping flowers, unaware,
Unfurl beneath her watchful eye,
And lovers, lost in moonlit snare,
Believe they share her secrecy.

A smile, perhaps, the clouds enfold,
A tear, a crescent, sharp and bright –
The Moon, a story yet untold,
In realms beyond the reach of sight.

What do you think?

What are your fears about AI?

If you don’t master it, it will master you.

Progress is everything. AI is progress. Therefore, AI will be in everything. I love progress and new things.
Nevertheless, new things create new questions..

Will bots replace you? Is using ChatGPT to compose an email ethical? Eat rocks if Google’s searchbot says so? (No.)

Despite adults’ concerns, many youngsters are already experiencing generative AI. Snapchat and Instagram have it; iPhones and Chromebooks will get it.

“More than a decade on, adults are still trying to unravel what smartphones and social media did—and do—to young people,” If anything, worry over their impact on youth and mental health has increased. Today’s parents face various tech backlash waves due to AI.

Of sure, worries are valid. Young people may benefit from AI: using it ethically and under surveillance could be the answer.

Many a time, I have asked myself this question: How will AI shape our lives? Will it also transform our mental lives? Maybe. However, the foundation of such physical realities is neither solid nor sturdy. However, AI can influence our perceptions, causing us to see what we want to see rather than what is actually in front of us. Or, the other way around. Because sometimes we see what we want to see and not what is in front of us.
We are humans, not robots.

In my opinion, the AI can shape realities from the point of view of perceptions.
We have access to a vast amount of information. What will we do with it?

We live in the age of choices.
“Beyond the age of information is the age of choices.” – Charles Eames

Writing Prompts That Work For Me

Write as if your life depends on it.

On first impression writing is an activity like any other, only it is not. It has no routine.
Writing is a creative activity that knows no drills, no thrills, only a lot of hard work.
When I feel tired and my mind feels dry, I might think that I will finish that piece, one way or another. It is not that easy. When I am so tired that I do not want to fight anymore with the words I use the prompt above.
It is very effective.

Writing is a difficult task, which is why we see the rise of AI-generated texts everywhere.
Writers’ block is a harsh truth. This is why some individuals may consider using artificial intelligence (AI) to create articles. It is hard to permanently come up with fresh ideas that conquer hearts.

Start with the truest sentence that you know.
I love this prompt from Hemingway.
It helped me a lot over the years.

When I am in want of new ideas and perspectives/ angles, I am reminded of the beauty of nature which is fresh and beautiful every second of the time that we are willing to spend watching it. Fresh view/ fresh imagination. Where does nature take its unique beauty ?

Maybe because it does not intend to create astonishing views, its perpetual change is vibrant. We, writers, should do the same. Write without thinking at the final results. Just write and the shape of your ideas will be magnificent.

Don’t describe an emotion, make it.

I was trying to mimic the talent of Proust and try to employ the madeleine effect. It’s the way in which a certain smell, taste, or other sensory experience suddenly triggers a specific memory for you, especially a memory that’s strong, clear, and emotional.
Word that memory with pathos and imagine that your readers rely on you to understand the structure of a moon beam and the sun-filled glare of the blinding sea.

This is a very difficult question, and the answer is more or less subjective.
I am a poetry lover and writer, and world poetry is my oyster.

Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion; it is not the expression of personality but an escape from personality. But, of course, only those who have personality and emotion know what it means to want to escape from these.” – T.S. Eliot, Tradition and the Individual Talent, 1912
