Oud Zarian Creed: The Scent of an Idealized Haven

One of my May articles on Fragrantica is a review of the unexpected Oud Zarian Creed.

I missed out on this fragrance last year and so also on this new rose type in my collection: the dusty dune rose. It could be, for a person with my imagination, the rose that has sprung from the spice dunes of the desert planet of Dune. The rose is rather hard to perceive in Creed’s Oud Zarian at the very beginning of the fragrance, as it is covered in a blanket of colorful spices, each singing its own tune.

Oud Zarian is like a painting: in one corner there are the dunes covered in powdery roses whose vintage glare is deepened by chocolatey, dense, 80-year-aged Oud Choron, which bestows an aromatic, almost animalic warmth. In another corner, a savage, lush garden with greenery from all over the planet.

The Rose Centifolia that blossoms at its heart is tender and shy, but it bestows a certain tension, as if we were watching the plush bloom opening under the glimmer of the May sun.

Even though I am not at Esxence, I have managed to herald a new exciting creation by Jacques Fath: LE 12 VICTOR HUGO.

In July 2025, La Maison Jacques Fath Parfums unveiled its very first boutique at 12 Avenue Victor Hugo, marking a new chapter rooted in its Parisian origins. More than an address, this flagship embodies a place where heritage, creativity, and emotion converge—continuing a story that began nearly 80 years ago, when Jacques Fath first captured the spirit of Parisian elegance through couture and fragrance.

LE 12 VICTOR HUGO, a new creation in the Fath’s Essentials Collection by IFF Master Perfumer Jean-Christophe Hérault, celebrates the opening of the Maison’s first boutique at 12 Avenue Victor Hugo, in the 16th arrondissement of Paris.

Conceived as a tribute to this emblematic address, the fragrance captures more than a place—it expresses an atmosphere. One shaped by light, texture, and the elegance of a Parisian interior, where heritage is not preserved behind glass, but lived, shared, and continuously reimagined.

Rouge Rebel VERTUS: Review

My last article on Fragrantica is a review of Rouge Rebel VERTUS.

Firstly, Rouge Rebel by Vertus is ripe, with smoky cherries on top of a dimly perceived leather.

In my opinion, it is a flagship fragrance for both raspberry and leather. I am not very keen on raspberry notes in fragrances, but their scent in this perfume is captivating. The raspberries carry the shine of the peak of summer and the shady corners of wilderness; it is more than just raspberries; I can also smell strawberries. The freshness of the berries lasts for a very short time. They become sweet fruits, embalmed with the mellow sweat of summer herbs, in the hottest July weather of the Northern Hemisphere. Then lush, deep black cherry compote takes the lead.

The leather note is there, glimmering throughout the entire development of the fragrance. At first impression, Rouge Rebel feels like a very modern leather fragrance.

Rouge Rebel is unlike any other leather fragrance I know. The addition of forest fruits creates a milder and fresher scent. I have never understood the old leather fragrances, those that smelled like vintage car interiors. They carry so much weight with them.

Still, Rouge Rebel is not a simple and linear fragrance. There is tension from the fact that the drydown is as unpredictable as it can be in a perfume. It becomes less warm and sharper, and it ends with a bang.

I perceive it as an absolute modern fragrance and an absolute vintage fragrance in one eerie combo.

Miraj Pantera Review

My last article on Fragrantica is a review of Miraj Pantera.

I have reported on the Romanian Miraj brand since its revival in 2022. Miraj was a renowned brand whose fragrances originally created history and countless warm memories of childhood. Our mothers and grandmothers were dedicated users.

I like all the Miraj fragrances; they all bring something intriguing and a new story woven in fragrant notes. My favorite until now is Amara, a cherry-citrusy fragrance. Eva Lux, launched this year, features a wild, imaginary rose enveloped in violet hues — what I consider to be the perfect representation of the iconic flower in absentia. The rose note is craftly recreated out of other ingredients.

In my opinion, Pantera by Miraj is another unexpected oud fragrance. I think I have found a new passion and trend in perfumery, the new enlightenment of oud, which I reported in my review of Oud Zarian by Creed.

This is my list of the bests of Esxence 2024, starting with my favorite holiday spot, Greece, the champagne to toast its beauty under the star-lit sky, while looking up at Wega, sniffing the sugary roses of this garden of Eden full of trees with ripe fruits and flowers, juicy cherries, and gazing at forest clearings filled with happy violets. The perfect cosmic and earthy chaos and whirlpool of perceptions, according to the Paradise Lost and Found theme of Esxence this year.

This is a fascinating topic for me, as I always ask perfumers and others in the industry: What comes first? The notes or the story?

Until now, Hiram Green, Stephanie Bakouche, Tara Deraskhan, founder of NEH, MR Abdulla Ajmal, CEO of Ajmal Group, and Ștefan Răduț, creative director of Romanian brand Caeleste Parfums, have answered this question…

Colors of ENHALA, The First Perfumery Event in Bucharest – Part 1

The venue for this first fragrant event has been beautifully selected: the Marmorosch, a historic building in Bucharest that once served as the headquarters of the Marmorosch Blank Bank.

The Marmorosch Blank Bank Palace was built between 1915 and 1923, in a neo-Romanian style, with Byzantine and Gothic influences. The building is listed as a historical monument in Bucharest. The construction was commissioned by Marmorosch Bank, Blank & Co., one of the most important Romanian banking institutions of the 1920s, owned by Iacob Marmoroch and Mauriciu Blank.

Yes, I am of the opinion that love is sweet turbid chaos. I have this in mind when discussing the celebration of love in my country too.

The power of love is unparalleled. It should be honoured every day, not just in February. I believe love and perfumery share magical abilities that can only be destroyed by the passage of time.

We cherish love in Romania on February 24th, when we celebrate Dragobete, our Valentine’s Day. Dragobete comes from the word “Dragoste,” the Romanian word for love.

Dragobete, the god of youth, joy, and love, has ancient origins. Dragobete, the patron of love and good disposition, was also known as the “Head of Spring,” the “Son of Baba Dochia,” “St. John of Spring,” or “the fiancé of the birds” in Romanian popular tradition, and was associated with the ancient gods of love. The holiday of love was celebrated in Romanian villages through several ritual practices that marked the end of winter and the beginning of spring, when people resonate with the rebirth of nature.

VLAD is the new fragrance by Filippo Sorcinelli, launched as a collaboration with Niche Parfumerie.

’A great writer of fiction both creates—through acts of imagination, through language that feels inevitable, through vivid forms—a new world, a world that is unique and individual, and responds to a world, the world the writer shares with other people but is unknown or misknown by still more people, confined in their worlds.’ -American writer, filmmaker, and intellectual Susan Sontag (1933-2004).

I guess this definition aptly incorporates the fragrant story of VLAD. It creates a new world and responds to a world full of unseen and unsung wonders. Filippo Sorcinelli, with clear-sighted authenticity, both illuminates and darkens one of Romania’s greatest myths.
