One of my latest articles on Fragrantica discusses love translated into fragrances (or the other way around …)

Yes, I am of the opinion that love is sweet turbid chaos. I have this in mind when discussing the celebration of love in my country too.

The power of love is unparalleled. It should be honoured every day, not just in February. I believe love and perfumery share magical abilities that can only be destroyed by the passage of time.

We cherish love in Romania on February 24th, when we celebrate Dragobete, our Valentine’s Day. Dragobete comes from the word “Dragoste,” the Romanian word for love.

Dragobete, the god of youth, joy, and love, has ancient origins. Dragobete, the patron of love and good disposition, was also known as the “Head of Spring,” the “Son of Baba Dochia,” “St. John of Spring,” or “the fiancé of the birds” in Romanian popular tradition, and was associated with the ancient gods of love. The holiday of love was celebrated in Romanian villages through several ritual practices that marked the end of winter and the beginning of spring, when people resonate with the rebirth of nature.

VLAD is the new fragrance by Filippo Sorcinelli, launched as a collaboration with Niche Parfumerie.

’A great writer of fiction both creates—through acts of imagination, through language that feels inevitable, through vivid forms—a new world, a world that is unique and individual, and responds to a world, the world the writer shares with other people but is unknown or misknown by still more people, confined in their worlds.’ -American writer, filmmaker, and intellectual Susan Sontag (1933-2004).

I guess this definition aptly incorporates the fragrant story of VLAD. It creates a new world and responds to a world full of unseen and unsung wonders. Filippo Sorcinelli, with clear-sighted authenticity, both illuminates and darkens one of Romania’s greatest myths.

Because of the holidays, I will have more time to watch movies. I might check out season 5 of Emily in Paris.

I watch Emily in Paris when I am too exhausted to think about it and its numerous inconsistencies. For example, how in the blazes is Mindy willing to sing topless at Crazy Horse because she needs money for Eurovision, yet she can still afford a $15,000-worth outfit? Among other very pricey outfits. Yes, I know; these kinds of TV shows have other purposes than being realistic.

On a more practical note, how does Emily manage to fit two oversized fluffy fur coats, along with many other Christmas presents and items, into her one cargo bag? I tried to and failed.

The discussion of Belle Époque history in Season 5 seems to captivate everyone. While that’s excellent, it’s a bit surprising for a marketing manager not to be familiar with such a significant topic. I admit I might be harsh. To me, the true marketing genius is Donald Draper from Mad Men, not Emily in Paris.

Still, the message is very good. In my opinion, another Frenchman said it even better: “The true paradises are the paradises that we have lost.” ― Marcel Proust

Wrapping up for the end of the year

🔷 I’m very busy these days, and what else is new?

It has been a very trying year, and I am speaking from a personal standpoint now.

From other perspectives, this year has been ordinary, very busy, and challenging. As it always is for me. But I do not mind. I like new things, new challenges, new projects, new places or old places and new outlooks.

Unfortunately my personal problems got in the path of business development projects, and that was not good.

I have forgotten a bit that in my professional life, I usually have a carefully and thoroughly thought-out plan that helps me achieve what I want.

For example, my political career was the result of such a plan. I joined the party in 2019, and in 2020 I was elected city council member. Allegedly, I stood no chance in that, but with the help of my strongest skills—writing and the power of presentation—I designed a plan. It was not luck; it was a very clever plan based on what I can do best. And A LOT of work.

PS: I am no longer a city council member because it was an assumed choice. I did not run for local elections in 2024.

🔷 Consequently, I am:

➡️ Devising a marketing plan

➡️ Revamping my websites

➡️ Setting up meetings and projects for next year

➡️ Developing a new project

➡️ Expanding my operations on a new platform

➡️ Exploring the potential of new AI platforms

➡️ Continuing my SEO strategy for my business

➡️ Designing my editorial plan for the year 2026, which I have already scheduled until March 2026.

Crème Ébène: Reflections on an Indulgent Present and a Touch of POAL

One of my latest articles on Fragrantica is dedicated to another Nicolai Parfumeur Createur gem, Crème Ébène.

“Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don’t resist them—that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward however they like.” — Lao Tzu.

I am living the sweet present of my own making. Even if occasionally I might forget how fortunate I am, a new fragrant creation will remind me of feeling lucky and carefree sitting next to an (imaginary) plate of something delicious. This is how I feel about gourmand fragrances.

In my opinion, Crème Ébène feels deep and dense, like Portrait of a Lady by Frederic Malle (POAL) without the rose. The magnetic rose in POAL is replaced by an enthralling combination of dates, saffron, white flowers, cardamom, and a resinous glance, which adds sparkles to the whole fragrance.

Crème Ébène is the gourmand brother of POAL.
