Tips for Job Seekers: The Myth of the Cover Letter

How many impressive cover letters do you think you have written? And, if you’re a recruiter, how many have actually impressed you?
I’m betting the answer is none.

I write cover letters virtually every day, but I am sure none of them is dazzling.

I am committed to crafting the perfect cover letter.

Until I am done, I always give as example Eudora Welty’s cover letter for The New Yorker.

It is the best one ever written, that is why I introduce it at my Creative Writing Course under the heading “How To Pitch Yourself”.

Writing Prompts That Work For Me

Write as if your life depends on it.

On first impression writing is an activity like any other, only it is not. It has no routine.
Writing is a creative activity that knows no drills, no thrills, only a lot of hard work.
When I feel tired and my mind feels dry, I might think that I will finish that piece, one way or another. It is not that easy. When I am so tired that I do not want to fight anymore with the words I use the prompt above.
It is very effective.

Writing is a difficult task, which is why we see the rise of AI-generated texts everywhere.
Writers’ block is a harsh truth. This is why some individuals may consider using artificial intelligence (AI) to create articles. It is hard to permanently come up with fresh ideas that conquer hearts.

Start with the truest sentence that you know.
I love this prompt from Hemingway.
It helped me a lot over the years.

When I am in want of new ideas and perspectives/ angles, I am reminded of the beauty of nature which is fresh and beautiful every second of the time that we are willing to spend watching it. Fresh view/ fresh imagination. Where does nature take its unique beauty ?

Maybe because it does not intend to create astonishing views, its perpetual change is vibrant. We, writers, should do the same. Write without thinking at the final results. Just write and the shape of your ideas will be magnificent.

Don’t describe an emotion, make it.

I was trying to mimic the talent of Proust and try to employ the madeleine effect. It’s the way in which a certain smell, taste, or other sensory experience suddenly triggers a specific memory for you, especially a memory that’s strong, clear, and emotional.
Word that memory with pathos and imagine that your readers rely on you to understand the structure of a moon beam and the sun-filled glare of the blinding sea.

Just Write

I started writing by chance. I started writing poems for quieting my sorrows and burns caused by difficult waves of life.

Writing is
quieting the burns
from people’s thoughts and deeds
And dissolving
all knowledge
that this will
ever happen…
Writing (an old poem)

One of the most cherished moments in my life is when I bring pen and paper to the beach and watch the waves incessantly, as my mind becomes a canvas for ideas to gallop freely.

In a more prosaic approach, everybody must make a habit of writing, whether is:
Journaling
Notetaking
Goal-writing
Blogging
Storytelling
List-making
Poetry-writing

Writing can clear your mind, refine your ideas, develop your thoughts, and help you see things clearly.
It has been demonstrated that a written goal is half-fulfilled.

Why don’t you try?
Just write!

The creative instinct

“The creative instinct is … an enormous extra vitality, a super-energy, born inexplicably in an individual… — an energy which no single life can consume.”

I love words.
I cherish idioms, jargon, vernacular language. The most I love is Pan’s Labyrinth or treasure trove of word-work. Which firstly blind-numbs my eyes and mind. Then I have the eyesight of Argus and my mind channels the hands of Vulcan.

I have a BA in English language and civilization and I hold a second degree in Economics.
I have more than 20 years’ experience in teaching and writing academic pieces about finance, accounting, business, legal, marketing. I have created one-of-a-kind courses and tailored product descriptions for my corporate customers.

I am primarily a teacher of English and I am in love with words. I write stories. Simple stories. About dreams and goals, failure and foible, fallacy and reality, blossoming and withering. And I want to know about your passions and dreams, wishes and hopes, blossoming and flourishing…And the spears from life that make us glint. Nevertheless, I am a dreamer on a cloud. As dreams cost nothing… In ordinary days, I am a word-weaver for stories that build ladders. In the best of days, I just follow the seasons by means of bike, skis, or roller-skates. I am grateful to all colors of the world and to people who read, laugh, smile, and drop a line here.
