Of Serendip

There is a very old folktale that dates back to the Sassanid Empire about the Three Princes of Serendip, who travelled the world, making discoveries. These seemed to be accidental, but the discoveries were reinforced by the princes’ wisdom in recognizing and taking advantage of these apparent accidents. During the 18th century the art historian and antiquarian Horace Walpole brought the word “serendipity” into the English language based on this story, in which the heroes were “always making discoveries, by accidents and sagacity, of things they were not in quest of”.

Be of Serendip. Indulge in the freedoms of travelling, vicariously or not.

Education and experience do not come from a paper. I have two main papers, but the most important papers are the ones I have been filling since I started doing the work I am proud of, the work that I have sent and showed to perfect strangers while making decisions in times of eclipses of mind and ideas.
We have skills, as stated in our papers, nevertheless the ones we need to sail the murky waters of translucent innovation and the rock-solid skills of a bootstrapper are still pending…

Your freedom is your new-found-land, your Serendip.

Freedom is novelty in thinking, words, ideas. Each day comes with a new attire of projects. Finish some of them, mold some into new stuff. Your stuff… Show your stuff to new people. Send something that you yourself have weaved.

Nevertheless, some days would be spent drifting while hope gets eaten by a dragon. But as an entrepreneur, there is just one way available, that of gritty positivism. Otherwise you’ve got yourself a problem, solved when silvery hope shines again, lit by your work and the people you care about.

Writing is a ladder

Writing is a ladder out of Chaos.

My Tyrannosaurus writing has found me a path out of chaos. Chaos amidst which I found myself while trying to develop my business. Then I did not know that business world is sharks’ empire. I put it in writing in my Shark Tale.

Writing must be something of an Iron Tale, must be tough and sincere to the core of human perception of pain as valor. I remain the grumpy T-Rex who started writing out of pain, not necessarily because of a broken world. But now and then with words we glue shards and pieces and put them together with blood. As we sometimes taste blood, ours or others’.

Be the one who cares, make words so disruptive that they create new worlds, hopes and dreams. Even if we are unhappy dinosaurs and find shelter in an Iron Tale or ruminate about feeling too much, whilst declaring colorless apparel, we should take power and strength from our stories. “We tell ourselves stories in order to live.”- Joan Didion

Writing is a ladder to the sky in your mouth when you are in love. 

Pay toll to love in words. If I sing songs to the blooming trees, they remain in bloom. My words protect them from smothering summers and mellow autumns. The “herbivore” writing is sweet and protective. Still they are disruptive words that create ladders and unite…people and their stories.

The moon and the sixpence

You belong with the legions of toil that must grub in the dirt for the sixpence. You belong with the legions that dare lift their eyes to contemplate the moon to substitute food for the dance of imagination. You belong with the vulgar and with the spirited being what carries the tinge of heaven in a smile.

You belong with all that is hard, low and unbeautiful, yet you dare live with the stars and make stardust trails. You belong by rights with the legions of strive, nevertheless in one corner of the mind there is an inverted eye that yearns for the lunarian shape-shifting beauty.

You belong by rights to creativity and labor. Creativity is vision or as Samuel Butler vanguardly put (almost two centuries ago):  “When a man is in doubt about this or that in his writing, it will often guide him if he asks himself how it will tell a hundred years hence.”

Creativity is strategy. Strategy must vary as does the moon.

We are not so busy looking at the moon that we do not see the sixpence at our feet. Nor are we so engulfed in drudge that we do not see the sky. We’d better see the moon and the sixpence all at once. Our dreams and our toils should answer all our questions in the change of crescents to vanishing waning moons.

Tyrannosaurus writing

“I’ve been blogging since February of 2001. When I started blogging, it was a dinosaur blog. It was me and a handful of tyrannosaurs. We’d be writing blog entries like, ‘The tyrannosaurus is getting grumpy.” – Neil Gaiman

The dinosaur in me writes the Iron Tales or ruminates about feeling nothing in the Equilibrium, when he is grumpy and scared. He writes about feeling nothing in order to hide away fear of feeling too much, to solidify the knowledge of being woundable…and to Live. “We tell ourselves stories in order to live.”- Joan Didion

The Tyrannosaurus writing shapes all, sometimes in a no-win situation, sometimes in a win-win situation. A no-win is when you write for herbivores, and win-win when you write for your own kind. They understand. You write about something they would wanna have or feel at least for once in their lives. Being grumpy and a T-Rex saves a lot of trouble when your writings hit judgmental walls. Your skull endures…

To write with the truth of pain in your mouth is gruesome poetry…You’ll have to cut out your heart with every word and show it to the world, then hope it will heal. This is how the light gets in, also the dark. Dreamers and doers

“The true entrepreneur is a doer, not a dreamer.” – Nolan Bushnell

Yes, you will have to do a lot of things which are borderline between imagining, weaving your (business) plan and really implementing your idea and your strategy of creating value.
Because this is all about – helping and solving problems. Entrepreneurship is all about doing and working, which is not that unfathomable. We all do the heavy lifting, we all have exerting routines…Knowing what to do and how to do it is the conundrum. As sometimes we are not given the time for the Trial and Error, we have only Error and but a moment to make amends.
We are pilferers of experience and growth hackers. Our job is not to do our job, but know what to do next.

And craft a good plan with poised goals.
The plan should be realistic and thorough. I and plans mix like oil and water as I repel routines and like the spark of new things which renders me a little shallow. But then I thought, what if my life depends on my thoroughness? This made me make a very good plan with all the questions attached and answered.

Beneath the obvious goals of my business, I have another one: to change something in the people I get to know. For the better and for the happier, with a piece of advice, with answers, with some words they do not know and need. After all, happiness is what we crave. Inspiration may never cease and I have had good source in Seth Godin‘s words: “Who do you want your customers to become?”

Everything starts with an idea which can translate into purpose, project and product with a little help from tiny beautiful things – words. Dream about your story, but not too hard. Fight your way into new things and enterprises but don’t take yourself too seriously. As “life is not about how you survived the storm… it is about how you danced in the rain.” – Regina Brett

What made you turn to entrepreneurship?

Freedom. Freedom of choice. Freedom of speech. Freedom of ideas. Freedom of doing what you love. Freedom of enchanting your followers and clients. (Aren’t they the same?) Freedom of finding solutions outside the known path. Freedom of smiling after a successful business meeting. Freedom of alleviating pain. Freedom of being a dreamer and showing people your dreams. Freedom of imagination.

Building anything is never easy. I have been building my body since the last years of the last century. Still I am not enthralled but I believe in my lorryfull of resilience…

When you start your business you (should) start by touching people’s lives. Sometimes, if you are terribly lucky, you touch their hearts. Our hearts are in desperate need of being touched, aren’t they?
In the end everything boils down to showing people your own heart. Even if sometimes this feels like nakedness. Trust your gut and move on. Show them the unique problem-solving magic of your business and what will empower them to do. Make them aware of your efforts and your vision. Make them trust your mission and enjoy the ride.

Never fear of being wrong as you will be oftentimes right in learning a new lesson. Each day passing…

Word Debt

Words are everywhere…They float about and run towards us since forever and shape our fragile childhood dreams.
Words make us humane. Our entire being is constructed upon words.
And then we become in debt… We owe a “Good morning”, a “Good night”, a “I miss you”, a “I love you”, a “Thank you” … if we are lucky.

Words storm over us in apprehension of our hearts. We name feelings, colors, sentiments, passions. We imagine stories and name our heroes. We become enchanters and share the limelight of our stories. We fall in love.

We owe nothing but WORDS. And promises, commitments, visions, dreams and magic…

Flock of words travel to us every day. Some we hear. Some are left in a deaf haze, unanswered and alone.

Words are powerful. Yet they need a power which does not lie within themselves. As it lies within you. Give power to your words! Shape them clear and make them swift, concise and lasting.

I run a words business. No matter how much I give, I am still in debt… For many years and many blissful days. I give power to your words and shape them correctly in sentences free of doubt and alive with promises…

We always keep.

Do business in Equilibrium – part 2

Life is irregular and we need to do business in Equilibrium to simplify and even the rough facets of human interaction.

Sometimes you feel like you have crossed oceans and seas to find the one-of-a-kind orange tree adorned with gold leaves. Or maybe you have found the magic lettuce from the Bear’s garden*.
You are prepared to offer it to your customers, still they are not pleased and want more.

They want More because Less is what they do not understand: the core of your business, the “elusive” thing without which your product does not exist: Your MISSION statement.

Your mission appeals to the mindset of people.
Your mission creates connections.
Your mission creates promises you HAVE to keep.
Empty your heart of misgivings and fulfill your promises by following your business pattern and delivery system.
And keep an eye on the money.
Running a business is like running a show. It is either good or bad. In the beginning it is usually bad. So don’t sweat about it. But make it good in time…Make it so good that your first business show now appears to have been held for the Eskimos, a hundred years back.

Do business in Equilibrium

As business owner always imagine you are based in Equilibrium.
This film is a fine piece of art about an utopian society governed by the banning of emotions and consequently, the banning of every form of art.
To sum up in a few gentle words, your product appeals to the feelings and emotions of your consumers but your business dealings don’t.

When dealing with customers you have no feelings. Because you will get a lot of rejection, and this might shred your courage into so tiny bits that you will not be able to recognize yourself. Then you start doubting the magic problem-solving power of your product. Don’t. It is still you and your product is wonderful.

Don’t care what people say and think about you. Care if they don’t respect you and your work. And care if they don’t respect your time.

Trust your intuition. If you have the feeling that you are wasting time with a (non)client, you are probably right, so stop the swapping of emails as this leads nowhither. Your time is as precious as any other assets in your company.

Businesses are not about passions. Yes, your product is your passion, but selling it (with a profit) involves cold calculations.

Don’t overthink. There are 2 types of clients, people who want to do business with you and people who don’t. The challenge is to detect the latest category (ASAP) and distance from them.
